Experiment, play, and get creative for free!

Croydon Fun Palace will be open from 11am to 5pm on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 October. It has been built by the community, for the community, and everyone is welcome.

A bustling hub in the Whitgift Centre will host a whole range of activities, and be the starting point for an interactive explorer trail that offers lots more to see and do. Croydon Fun Palace information point is in the Hub on Level 2 of the Whitgift Centre, next to Aquazoo and close to Waterstones.

Here’s where to find it within the Whitgift Centre:

Find us in the Whitgift Centre

Beyond the Hub there will be an explorer trail around the local area as well as a programme of performances in the Whitgift Centre. Experience the Croydon Fun Palace buzz all weekend by joining in with a pedal-powered disco, Azonto dancing, singing workshops, apple pressing, and unusual musical instruments made from fruit. Pick up the full trail programme from the information point in the Hub.

You can also come and explore the five zones of the Hub, where you’ll have a chance to try new things and create something with your own hands, either to take away or contribute to larger installations:
Fab Lab
Short for Fabrication Laboratory, the Fab Lab is your introduction to some of the latest manufacturing technology. Pose for a 3D portrait and take away a digital image of yourself, take a workshop in SketchUp, a 3D modelling program used in fields from architecture to video game design, or watch a working 3D printer produce plastic objects from digital computer files.

Open all day on Saturday and Sunday. 3D scanning and 3D printing on a drop-in basis and open to all ages. SketchUp workshops, recommended for ages 14+, will run every half hour from 11.30am.
Ice Cream Parlour
In the Ice Cream Parlour, you can experiment with ingredients to create your own personal flavour. Once you’ve got the mix just right, a Fun Palace Maker will show you how to turn your mixture into real ice cream using the awesome power of science – no freezer required!

Open to all ages and running on Saturday and Sunday every half hour from 11.15am. Contains dairy!
Come on a tour of the Universe with photos of distant galaxies. Hear from real astronomers how these beautiful images are made and perhaps even have a go at making solar observations (weather permitting!). Once you’ve been inspired by these captivating pictures, make your own star with paper craft and basic electronics and add it to the large-scale star map.

On a drop-in basis all day Saturday and Sunday and open to all ages.
Relax in the garden, or get stuck into some planting and sowing. Explore nature through a collection of objects from Heathfield Ecology Centre, set out a new planter for the local area or make your own grass headed friend to take home, complete with googly eyes!

On a drop-in basis all day Saturday and Sunday and open to all ages.
Learn a new craft or practice one you already know. Local people will be on hand to lead you through a whole range of traditional and contemporary crafts.

All activities on a drop-in basis and open to all ages. Saturday and Sunday, with times as follows…

Wellbeing wishes: Saturday, 11am-1pm
Make a collage to encourage kindness, either to yourself, someone else or the whole of Croydon. Keep your creation as a reminder or add it to other people’s in an installation of kindness for Croydon.

Quilling: Saturday, 1-3pm
Try your hand at this intriguing paper craft, making springs of paper and putting them together to create images with depth, colour and vibrancy.

Inchies: Saturday, 3-5pm
Create colourful collages on a miniature canvas, expressing your inspiration in just one square inch. Of course, you can always make more than one!

Pirates of the Croydibbean: Sunday, all day
Star in your own pirate film as you create the story, props and action for a pirate-themed adventure! Use a range of craft materials to make the props that will bring your story to life and capture it on film in front of a green screen. The finished film will be made available after the weekend.

Upcycling: Saturday and Sunday, all day
Work with a range textiles, and some more surprising materials, to update your style. There will be canvas bags to decorate with a Croydon Fun Palace theme, or you can get inspired to breathe new life into any items of clothing you’d like to bring along.
